Sometimes The Best Thing You Can Do In Your Healing Journey Is to Calm Your Nervous System

If your body is under chronic stress either from internal or external stressors, it will be impossible to achieve optimal health.

The autonomic nervous system has two main parts: Sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system controls the body’s response to a perceived threat and is responsible for the “fight or flight” response. The parasympathetic nervous system controls the body’s functions when a person is at rest and is responsible for the “rest and digest” function.

When a person is under chronic stress(from internal or external sources), they become sympathetic nervous system dominant. When this happens, cortisol output increases causing hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, and more. It also hinders your ability to heal.

When it comes to healing, one of the first things you want to do is calm the nervous system so that the healing can actually take place.

Of course, we do this by addressing the root cause but some other things you can do to calm the nervous system are:

  • Meditation
  • Breathwork
  • Prayer
  • Journaling
  • Hatha Yoga
  • Walk Outdoors
  • Get Daily Sun (if possible)
  • Get 7-9 Hours of Good Sleep
  • Avoid Inflammatory Foods (Processed, Gluten, Sugar, Refined Oils, etc…)
  • Listen To Binaural Beats
  • Laugh & Have Meaningful Social Connections

Incorporating one or more of the above practices in your daily routine can have a tremendous impact on your health in a positive way.
